When should one consider the option of expanding one’s work force? Everybody starts business as a single individual or as a part of a partnership of one or two other individuals. Depending on the speed at which the business grows, one should consider adding more employees.
Bringing additional individuals into your business that has been run single-handedly in the past will be a very big change. Many individuals become very possessive about their business. So much so that they employ individuals to take care of certain duties and then proceed to do all the work themselves. The most important factor to consider when employing individuals is the fact that delegation is not the same as duplication. Do not expect your employees to work in exactly the same manner and style as yours.
Each and every individual has independent style. You must adopt a goal centric approach when dealing with your employees. As long as they get the job done, you should be prepared to accept whatever method 3 and process that is followed. Many employees quit early because the employer was focused on micromanagement.
There always is a risk of losing control over the business if you do not keep employees under control. However, you should ensure that you do not add to your duties by employing another individual and then proceeding to rework each and every bit of work that he or she has done. Having employee is a financial responsibility. Hence, make sure you get value for money out of your decision to expand your labor force. It is no different than your decision to go in for hybrid cars instead of standard cars.
