Business marketing advice

Most entrepreneurs embark on their business voyage, especially the maiden one, without much thought given to the marketing aspect of the business. Infrastructure, if required, for manufacturing the product and enrolment of experts to provide the service are those that occupy the new found entrepreneur’s mind (time tracking software makes this much easier for small businesses). It is only at some later stage that realisation sets in on the importance of marketing the particular business.

If purchase of infrastructure or the payroll to be paid to experts who make up the business requires money to be set aside and planned for, marketing needs much more than these two put together. This is more so during the initial or formative stages of the business. Making the presence or existence of the business be known to the probable clients needs substantial money and only if done so effectively would the business draw in money as returns.

There are numerous methods for marketing. Direct and indirect, but both require money depending on the media or medium selected for the process. An advertisement in a local print media would be less costly than that conducted on a television show. However, the spread or reach of the television show is far greater than that possible through the local print media. The cost difference therefore, between the two forms of marketing ones business, is balanced out in this manner.

Once the amount of finance that can be set aside and used for marketing has been decided, only then can one go out and identify the source for such marketing. It can be said to an extent that direct form of marketing would cost lesser than indirect form of marketing. In direct form the reach is limited to a great extent whereas in indirect form, where another media is selected for the marketing, the cost is more proportionate to the reach of the media.

Given the advent of the World Wide Web and its plethora of tools like blogs, email etc, and marketing techniques using these tools are not only cheap but also has great spread of clients. The principle of marketing costs has taken a re-look due to these tools. Though they have their own restrictions, entrepreneur’s with less experience may look at these for their marketing process.
