Why Everyone Needs Basic Marketing Skills

It’s a scenario that’s all too common among many professional people. My mom, (a woman with three degrees and a job paying $42,000 a year), will be out of work over the summer. Basically, the school she works at will be closing down. This means that despite her credentials, she will be unemployed in a job market overflowing with applicants.
Now, compare that to my situation. Even though I only have an Associate’s Degree, I have four different writing clients I work for, each of which represents a separate income stream. I also make additional money with eHow and affiliate marketing. So, in the end, who is going to come out ahead– my mom or me?
Many people of her generation would automatically say she would because she has the experience and the credentials. But what they fail to realize is that there’s a million and one people nowadays with that. Ultimately, if you don’t spark an employer’s interest for whatever reason, you won’t get the job. And this means going another month or two without any solid income.
However, if you possess basic marketing skills, you’ll be able to survive even in the bad economy. Why? Well, you can use those skills towards starting your own business. Or, if you don’t feel comfortable doing that, you could write an e-book about some aspect of your profession. Whether you are a film maker or an actor, though to a caravan insurance salesman, you will have stories to tell that people will want to hear. You can then use your marketing ability to promote your e-book either through traditional front facing means or even online to the masses, allowing you to still make big money. If you know anything about seo at the moment, you are particularly in a good position to make serious money through the internet.
I mean, I realize that not everyone is going to want to take my path. And I respect that– in fact, the world would be pretty crazy if everyone made money at-home on their computers. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t learn basic marketing skills either, because with these skills you have the power to create your own financial independence.
With that being said, how can a person get started learning the ins and outs of marketing? Well, if they prefer printed materials, they can always order marketing books off of Amazon. Otherwise, there’s a plethora of free e-books and newsletters on the subject. You can find them through Google or Internet marketing forums like WarriorForum.com or DigitalPoint.com.
